Simple math: if most accidents involve distracted drivers, and accidents are a major expense for Florida auto insurance companies, then significantly reducing driver distraction ought to reduce the cost of insurance in the future. Can we make it happen?

Eric Bolton, the public affairs officer for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), said that most accidents were caused by drivers not paying attention. A report released by the NHTSA found that 80 percent of crashes involved drivers who were distracted within seconds of the crash. Here are just a few activities that can cause driver distraction:

Cell phones

Using a cell phone while driving is a major issue and one that is continues cause issues on the road.  Texting is perhaps the worst offence because it requires your eyes, hand and mind to be simultaneously occupied by something other than driving.

Road rage

Getting angry behind the wheel can cause you to make irrational decisions on the road. Road rage can come in the form of shouting abuse. While you are yelling out the window making gestures to another driver, you are not fully concentrating on the road.

Other distractions

There are in fact plenty of things that can cause momentary driver distraction both inside and outside the car.  Reading billboards, tuning in your car radio, changing a DVD, or reaching for something in a handbag or on the vehicle floor can distract drivers for long enough to reduce reaction time or cause them to swerve.
